Fearing failure or Fearing success? Which one are you fearing?
Fearing failure or Fearing success? Which one are you fearing?
I’m cleaning again.
Why am I cleaning?
I can afford a cleaner. I have a cleaner.
And yet here I am — wiping, rearranging, tidying, polishing things that do not need polishing.
Or maybe for you it’s something else.
Maybe you suddenly decide you must go for a walk.
Or you sit down to “read for a moment.”
Or you pour yourself a glass of something alcoholic “just to calm the anxiety.”
You call a friend.
You reorganize a drawer.
You scroll and scroll through social media until you forget why you even picked up the phone.
There are so many ways to escape. Too many, I would say.
Why do we do it?
I’ll tell you why: to avoid the work.
And not because we’re lazy.
But because we are trying to avoid mistakes.
A lot of women will feel this in their bones.
And if you’re a man reading this, please leave a comment — it would be so helpful to know you feel it too.

We avoid mistakes.
We avoid responsibilities.
We avoid failure.
And not only that — we avoid success.
People often look at me shocked when I say this.
“Who avoids success? Everyone wants success!”
I’m sorry to break the news, but that’s not true.
There are so many people quietly, subconsciously, deeply fearing success.
Why?
Because success feels big.
Success feels unknown.
Success feels like it has a price.
What if success takes all your free time away?
What if success brings more responsibilities when you’re already crumbling under the ones you have?
What if success changes you — and you fear some people will love you less, or leave, or become jealous?
What if success separates you from the life, the people, the comfort you know now?
Oh, there are so many emotions hiding underneath all of this.
But the moment we become aware of what we’re doing — we must stop.
The other day, I caught myself cleaning again.
Tidying, reorganizing, making things “perfect.”
Yes, I am a perfectionist — maybe a big one.
Yes, I love a clean home.
But that day, I wasn’t cleaning for cleanliness.
I was cleaning to avoid what I really had to do.
The big things.
The scary things.
The things that take me to another level — and another level always comes with more responsibility, more visibility, more unknowns.
And like you, I had the thought:
What if more success brings more pressure? More work? More expectations?
What if I lose people because I rise?
Well, I already have.
And now I understand: if success made some people disappear, they were not my people.
So next time you catch yourself doing your favorite escape — whether it’s cleaning, walking, scrolling, sipping, chatting, or doing absolutely anything except the thing you actually need to do — pause.
You are escaping.
Not because you’re weak, but because you’re scared.
And being scared is normal.
But awareness changes everything.
Here’s what to do:
Stop.
Interrupt the pattern — the moment you notice it.
Take three deep breaths.
Let the nervous system settle.
Read your why.
I hope you keep a list on your desk or your phone.
Why do you want a better life?
Who are you doing it for?
Your family?
Your children?
Your future?
Someone you love?
Your own pride?
Your legacy?
Your desire to make the world a better place?
When you look at your why, fear becomes smaller.
Then make a kind to-do list.
Not a punishing one.
Just three things.
Break everything into small steps.
Do one step.
And celebrate it — but not with hours of scrolling or a drink.
Celebrate yourself with kindness.
A gentle word.
A smile in the mirror.
A hand on your heart.
Tell yourself:
“I can do this. I am amazing.”
Because you are.
And if you don’t believe in yourself yet, borrow my belief.
I believe in you — truly.
Now tell me in the comments below:
Can you relate?
What are you fearing — success or failure?
Or maybe, like so many of us, you fear both.
What if the only thing standing between you and the life you want… is fear?
