Meet the Designers

Katerina Virtuti is the designer of the fine jewellery brand “Virtuti”.
Prior to designing her own jewellery, Katerina spent ten years with some of the best International Jewellery Brands such as Van Cleef and Arpels and Bulgari. Having previously studied art history in St Petersburg and being inspired by the Hermitage Old Master portraits collections of noble ladies’ fine clothes and jewellery, they later became the inspiration for her creating her own pieces.
As an Art Historian, she was continually exploring the wonderful heritage and craftsmanship of some of the finest Jewellery the World has ever seen. Katerina had a burning ambition which was dormant inside her, and she finally found a channel for expressing her creativity. This happened almost overnight when she woke up one day and started creating. She is still getting most of her designs in her dreams. In preparation for developing her own collections, she studied in the London Gemmological Institute of America to become both a Designer and a Gemmologist.
She learned the art of jewellery making from the internationally recognised jeweller Manuel Carrera in Madrid.

Now, with the tools to match the passion, Katerina has been able to create
“Virtuti” (which means in Latin: the best qualities and virtue in one personality), specialising in Bespoke and High Jewellery. The main feature of Virtuti jewellery is its versatility: a pair of earrings can be turned into brooches, one ring can be turned into three etc.

In 2014 and 2015 Virtuti has become the official jewellery of International Moscow Film Festival.

Karla Mertens studied for goldsmith and jewel design. For eight years she worked in the jewel shop of her parents, where she began to experiment with her first collection. In 1996 she started her own shop and studio in the centre of Leuven (Belgium), and since then has continued to grow as a jeweller and artist, and as a businesswoman with an exceptional warm-hearted and deep personal approach.

She never stopped evolving and finally grew into a designer with a mission, namely to create powerful healing, balancing and supporting life jewels that raise the awareness of the ones that are wearing them. Through ritual, she connects the jewels with his owner. Her inspiration she finds in ancient cultures, alternative healing, in life and death, grace and transformation. She emphasises harmony between geometry, handicraft and forging, and gives great attention to the purity of the metals and stones of which the jewels are made. Karla Mertens travels, sketches, dreams, feels, researches, develops and bravely deepens her passion for crystals, sacred geometry and alchemy. Her philosophy smoothly combines the scientific, artistic and energetic worlds. Her jewels are not just jewels but powerful objects that strengthen your path through life!

Francis de Lara is the world’s first fine jewellery-eyewear house, which now continues its evolution with traditional jewellery forms (earrings, rings, necklaces…) to complete the suite.

The eyewear pieces are patiently handmade and unique, from precious metals and gems, and take up to 750 hours to make, individually. Exacting attention to detail and quality is made. This handmade philosophy is also present in the non-eyewear pieces.

“Whilst living in Florence to study jewellery design at the Metallo Nobile, I sauntered over to the Palazzo Pitti or the Uffizi many a day. As I was looking at all of the beautiful Renaissance paintings: royalty and clergy adorned in incredible jewellery and clothing, I thought to myself “what kind of sunglasses would they have worn if they had had them?”

That idea developed into the idea of these jewellery-glasses: some for sun, and some for evening with clear to lightly tinted lenses that a woman can don with a simple black ‘Le Smoking’ tuxedo or a stunning red-carpet gown, to make a bold and beautiful statement, as an option to the more traditional necklace or brooch.

Fascinated by precious stones and jewels since forever, it is a trip to Sri Lanka that moves her and inspires her to launch and create her brand. During this journey, Nina is captivated by the wild and tropical nature, by the contact with the animals, particularly with the elephants. She will make it the emblem of her first collection. Upon her return, Nina wants to share her wonderful epic through her own jewellery. So she draws a collection merging her two passions, the world of high jewelery and that of wildlife.

Beyond the beauty of her pieces, the designer wants to convey a real message and defend a cause that is dear to her.
